The historic May Day will be observed today in the country as elsewhere in the world with a renewed pledge to protect the rights of workers and create a labour-friendly working atmosphere.

The day is observed across the world every year since 1886 commemorating the supreme sacrifices of workers at the Hay Market in the United States to establish the rights of eight-hour working day and with a renewed pledge to uphold the rights of working class.

Many working people sacrificed their lives on May 1, 1886 and the following days during series of movements, bomb attacks, riots and police actions on agitating workers while they were on a three-day strike at Hay Market in Chicago.

The Hay Market incident was a source of inspiration for people around the globe. As such, May Day has become an international celebration of the social and economic achievements of the labour movement.

The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh.

President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages greeted the working class people of the country and wished their overall welfare, reports BSS.

Zillur said safe environment-friendly working atmosphere, living wages, training, raising benefits and facilities and friendly owner-worker relations are necessary for establishing the rights of workers and ensuring their welfare.

Of the accused, 84 mutineers, including JCO (Junior Commanding Officer) medical assistant Subedar Major Hafizuddin, were present at the Darbar Hall during the February 25 mutiny and they took part in the carnage defying the order of then director general Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, he said.

A group of jawans, including medical assistants Nayek Subedar Torab Hossain Khan and Monoranjan Sarkar, were involved in removing bodies from the Darbar Hall and its adjacent areas on February 25, the prosecutor added.

At one stage, president of the three-member court BDR DG Maj Gen Md Mainul Islam wanted to know from Torab how many bodies they had removed on that day.

In reply, Torab said they had removed 40 to 42 bodies from 2:00pm to 5:00 in the evening using trucks and pickup vans.

India has been expediting the implementation process of various agreements, including export of 200MW electricity and providing one billion dollars soft loan to Bangladesh.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said this when Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid a courtesy call on him at India House in the Saarc Village in Thimphu Thursday morning.

The deals were signed between the two countries during the landmark visit of Hasina to New Delhiin January this year.

During the meeting held in a very cordial and warm atmosphere, the two leaders discussed various issues of bilateral and multilateral interests, including expansion of trade and business and enhancing connectivity between the two neighbouring countries.

After the half an hour meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told journalists that Manmohan assured Hasina of his country's support for the continuation of advancement of democracy in Bangladesh.

The Indian prime minister also informed the Bangladesh premier that his government would take necessary measures for finalising the draft of agreement on Teesta Water Sharing, which was handed over to Indian government recently.

Manmohan also announced his country's support for the Bangladesh's candidature in the Committee of Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

In response to the support of Bangladesh's efforts for the inclusion of the Sundarbans in the list of New Seven Wonders of the World, the Indian prime minister said both the countries would take joint initiatives to this end.

Expressing her satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed the hope that the relations would be accelerated further in the days to come for the benefit of the two peoples.

During the meeting, Sheikh Hasina invited Manmohan Singh to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time and the Indian prime minister accepted the invitation.

Among others, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, State Minister for Environment and Forest Hasan Mahmud, Ambassador-at-large M Ziauddin, Principal Secretary to the prime minister MA Karim, Foreign Secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes and PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad accompanied Hasina at the meeting.

Besides, Indian Foreign Minister SM Krishna and Foreign Secretary Nirupoma Rao were present.

Earlier, Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck paid a courtesy call on Hasina at Bangladesh House in the Saarc Village. During the meeting, they discussed various issues of bilateral interest.

Besides, Hasina who is now a three-day visit to Bhutan to attend the 16th Saarc Summit passed a very hectic day in Thimpu on Wednesday.

Apart from joining the opening session of the Saarc Summit, she held separate meetings with the Saarc leaders and joined a banquet hosted by Bhutanese Prime Minister Lyonchhen Jigmi Y Thinley in honour of head of states and governments of the eight Saarc countries.

Around 35,000 garment in Bangladeshi workers blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong and the Dhaka-Sylhet highways at Kanchpur of Narayanganj for five hours on Tuesday to press several demands including increase in their wages.

They also demanded attendance allowance, midday snacks and Tk 5,000 as minimum wage.

The workers of Opex Knitwear Limited, a sister concern of Sinha Group, took to the street at about 8:00am and blocked the highways by setting fire on tyres.

The angry workers also vandalised 10 vehicles on the highways, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

Several hundred vehicles on 18 different routes of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions got stranded on the highways.

The workers withdrew the blockade at about 1:00pm after getting assurance from the local police and the owners of the factory.

Officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station Mohammad Yunus Ali told The Daily Star that communications on the highways remained suspended for about four hours from 9:am to 1:00 in the morning, causing severe traffic congestion.

Banglar taza khobar/ Fire at Gazipur RMG factory in Bangladesh

A fire broke out at Tung Hi knit and sweater factory at Zirani in Gazipur Sadar upazila Friday morning, burning down valuable machinery and ready-made garments.

At least five people, including a fire fighter, were injured while trying to extinguish the blaze.

Garment workers said the fire broke out on the ground floor of the seven-storey building at about 7:00am and raged through the first and second floors of the building when few workers were working inside it.

On information, four fire fighting units from Gazipur Sadar, Tongi, Savar EPZ and Mirpur rushed in and brought the blaze under control with the help of garment workers at about 12noon.

Local people who live in the houses adjacent to the factory were seen leaving their residences due to huge smoke emitting from the burning factory.

The injured were sent to hospital.

Fire service sources said the fire might have originated from an elected short circuit.

The extent of loss from the fire could not be known immediately.
