Around 35,000 garment in Bangladeshi workers blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong and the Dhaka-Sylhet highways at Kanchpur of Narayanganj for five hours on Tuesday to press several demands including increase in their wages.

They also demanded attendance allowance, midday snacks and Tk 5,000 as minimum wage.

The workers of Opex Knitwear Limited, a sister concern of Sinha Group, took to the street at about 8:00am and blocked the highways by setting fire on tyres.

The angry workers also vandalised 10 vehicles on the highways, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

Several hundred vehicles on 18 different routes of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions got stranded on the highways.

The workers withdrew the blockade at about 1:00pm after getting assurance from the local police and the owners of the factory.

Officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station Mohammad Yunus Ali told The Daily Star that communications on the highways remained suspended for about four hours from 9:am to 1:00 in the morning, causing severe traffic congestion.
